A celebration was held to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Ordination of the Most Venerable Katugastota Uparatana Thero, Chief Judiciary Sanganayake of the United States and the Chief Incumbent of the Maryland Buddhist Vihara in Wheaton, on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at Vihara Premises.

More than sixty Buddhist Priests representing several Buddhist Temples across the United States were among those attending this meritorious event, including, The Most Ven. Members of the Sri Lankan – American community and several Buddhists representing Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Indian communities, were in attendance.

Ambassador Prasad Kariyawasam addressed the gathering and delivered the felicitation message from the President Maithripala Sirisena, who commended the contribution of Ven. Katugastota Uparatana Thero to Buddha Sasana and his socio-cultural activities, and complimented the efforts of Ven. Katugastota Uparatana Thero in enabling Sri Lankan Americans to mobilize with the Government of Sri Lanka to embark on a new historic journey for building a reconciled, inclusive and harmonious society in Sri Lanka.  (Full text of the message is linked).
