The Embassy of Sri Lanka organized a virtual Christmas Celebrations on 23 December 2021 with the participation of diplomats, staff and their families at the chancery premises.

On the occasion commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, members of the Hope Community Church, Arlington, and Calvary Church, New York virtually joined the programme in keeping with Covid-19 guidelines. The event, which recognized and celebrated Sri Lanka’s multi-religious, multi-cultural and multi-ethnic diversity, brought everyone together in a truly festive setting. Christian prayers and bible readings, carols, in all three languages Sinhala, Tamil and English, the traditional Christmas tree and gifts added to the seasonal atmosphere.

The programme began with a prayer by Rev. Dilantha Arachchilage from the Hope Community Church. Sister Grace Christopher read from the Holy Bible and blessed all those who joined the event.

In his remarks, Ambassador Mahinda Samarasinghe welcomed those in attendance as well as those connected virtually and appreciated their commitment and support in conducting the Christmas celebrations during the pandemic.

Ambassador Samarasinghe stressed the importance of Christmas in terms of reaching to others with love and friendship which also transcends religious boundaries. In this context, Ambassador Smarasinghe mentioned that Sri Lanka is a multi-cultural, multi-religious and multi-linguistic society and the protection and nurturing of that diversity will lead to national unity.

The members of the choir who were the Embassy’s staffer’s children sang a variety of Christmas carols which included both Sri Lankan and international songs which were well received by the audience. A special item was Ms. Hephzibah Srithas from New York Calvary Church singing a song in Tamil. Diplomatic staff, Embassy personnel and family members also participated.
