The Embassy of Sri Lanka in the United States, in collaboration with the International Club of DC, hosted a vibrant evening reception on 19 June 2026 at the Embassy premises in Washington D.C., promoting Sri Lanka as a premier tourist destination and showcasing the world-renowned Ceylon tea among US nationals. A large membership of the International Club of DC graced the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, H.E. Mahinda Samarasinghe, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the United States, warmly welcomed the attendees and invited them to visit Sri Lanka to experience the island’s extraordinary tropical splendour and exceptional diversity. He noted that Sri Lanka offers one of the world’s richest concentrations of natural and cultural attractions within a compact geographical area, from lush rainforests, exotic wildlife, pristine beaches, and scenic highlands to rich cultural heritage, vibrant traditions, and warm hospitality. The Ambassador also highlighted the free visa facility currently extended by Sri Lanka to United States nationals, encouraging participants to take advantage of this opportunity and discover the island’s unique appeal as a premier travel destination.
Several Sri Lankan dance troupes based in the United States performed traditional dances at the event, adding a lively cultural element to the evening. Their performances highlighted Sri Lanka’s rich dance traditions through distinctive rhythms, costumes, and movements, giving guests a meaningful glimpse into the diversity of the cultural heritage of Sri Lanka.
A key highlight of the evening was the promotion of Ceylon tea, one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated exports and an important symbol of the island’s heritage. Guests enjoyed freshly brewed hot and iced Ceylon tea which was provided by M/s Basilur Tea, along with a selection of Sri Lankan cuisine, offering an authentic taste of the country’s hospitality, culinary traditions, and distinctive flavours. Together, the tea, food, and cultural presentations created an engaging experience that encouraged greater interest in Sri Lanka as a tourism destination among American audiences.
The International Club of DC, which has more than 47,000 professionals, brought a large and diverse group of members to the event. The club promotes international cultural experiences through art, music, dance, theatre, and opportunities to enjoy cuisines from around the world.
The event strengthened people-to-people ties between Sri Lanka and the United States and helped promote Sri Lanka as an attractive destination for American travellers interested in culture, natural beauty, and warm hospitality.
The event was part of the Embassy’s ongoing efforts to promote Sri Lanka as a leading tourist destination and to raise awareness of the quality and global reputation of Ceylon tea. It also gave guests an opportunity to experience Sri Lankan culture and hospitality in a warm and engaging setting.
