Randolph college symposium 1

On 07 February 2025, at the invitation of the President of Randolph College, Ambassador Mahinda Samarasinghe participated in a captivating cultural event as part of The Movement Rhizome: Quillian International Symposium on Sri Lanka. The symposium held from 05-10 February 2025, explored Sri Lanka’s culture, history, and resilience through performances, workshops, and academic discussions.

The highlight of the event series was the Sri Lankan Dance Performance and Dialogue, “Contextualizing My Devil Dance,” presented on 07 February 2025 at Houston Memorial Chapel. Led by Sudesh Mantillake, the unique docu-dance performance featured choreography, narration, and dialogue, accompanied by Chinthaka Bandara on percussion and vocals, and Vajira Mantillake in dance and vocals. Dancers from the Randolph College Department of Performing Arts joined, creating a vibrant and collaborative display.

During her welcoming remarks, President Sue Ott Rowlands, the 11th President of Randolph College, emphasized the importance of global partnerships. She expressed her gratitude for the support and welcomed the presence of Mahinda Samarasinghe, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the United States.

Ambassador Samarasinghe expressed his gratitude to the college for strengthening ties with Sri Lanka in the liberal and performing arts and appreciated Scholar Mantillake’s endeavour in promoting Sri Lanka’s dance and cultural heritage among academia and practitioners. The Ambassador also engaged with attendees during the event and extended his best wishes for the symposium.

The symposium commenced on 5 February with a Sri Lankan Dance Workshop, followed by thought-provoking academic discussions on 8 February that brought together scholars, artists, and cultural practitioners. It concluded on 10 February with a screening of an unfinished film excerpt, accompanied by an engaging Talkback session. Counsellor Chathuri Perera accompanied the Ambassador to the dance performance and Dialogue.
