On the 3rd of February 2024, Asoka K. Silva, the Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka, hosted the 76th anniversary celebration of Sri Lanka's independence at the Saint Louis Clubhouse in Honolulu amidst members of the Sri Lankan-origin Hawaiian community.
The proceedings began with a recitation of Sri Lanka's national anthem, followed by the lighting of a traditional oil lamp by distinguished guests and multiethnic communities in Honolulu. Sri Lankan representatives read messages of felicitation from Sri Lanka's President, Prime Minister, and Foreign Minister. Attendees were treated to a vibrant performance highlighting Sri Lankan culture.
Krishna Jayaram, City Deputy Managing Director, and Chief of Staff Sam Moku, presented a proclamation on behalf of the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu, Rick Blangiardi. The proclamation recognised Sri Lanka and acknowledged the challenges the country has overcome in the past 76 years, while also emphasizing the strong bonds between the people of Sri Lanka and Hawaii.
The occasion was graced by several distinguished guests, including the former Mayor, Kirk Caldwell. Attendees also included Honorary Consuls from other countries in Hawaii and representatives from think tanks such as the Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies and East-West Center. The event concluded with a scrumptious lunch featuring traditional Sri Lankan cuisine.
