Highlights include resettlement, Economic development news

WASHINGTON (Oct. 10, 2011) – Jaliya Wickramasuriya, Sri Lanka’s ambassador to the United States and Mexico, is featured on a new webcast produced by the Embassy of Sri Lanka. During the webcast, Ambassador Wickramasuriya discusses post-conflict resettlement, reconciliation and development in Sri Lanka. He calls on members of the Sri Lankan community in the United States to help publicize those positive developments to help Americans better understand that lasting peace and growing prosperity has returned to Sri Lanka.

Government of Sri Lanka forces defeated the terrorist group LTTE in May 2009 after 26 years of conflict. Since then, there have been no terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka and the government has launched an expansive program to resettle those displaced by the fighting, reconcile ethnic differences and rebuild damaged areas. Today, nearly all the displaced have been resettled and infrastructure repairs continue as the economy in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province, where the war concluded, has markedly improved.

During his talk, Ambassador Wickramasuriya highlights a variety of such developments, and he urges Sri Lankans in the U.S. to contact their elected representatives to share the information with them.
