A celebration was held to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Ordination of the Most Venerable Katugastota Uparatana Thero, Chief Judiciary Sanganayake of the United States and the Chief Incumbent of the Maryland Buddhist Vihara in Wheaton, on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at Vihara Premises.

More than sixty Buddhist Priests representing several Buddhist Temples across the United States were among those attending this meritorious event, including, The Most Ven. Dr. Henepola Gunaratna Nayaka Thero of West Viriginia Bhavana Society ; The Most Ven. Maharagama Dhammasiri Nayaka Thero, Chief Prelate of Norther America and Chief Incumbent of Washington Buddhist Vihara; The Most Ven. Walpola Piyananda Nayaka Thero, Chief Incumbent of the Dharmavijaya Buddhist Vihara Inc. in Los Angeles, California; Ven. Hungampola Siriratana Nayaka Thero, Chief Incumbent of the New Jersey Buddhist Vihara; Ven. Heenbunne Kondanna Nayaka Thero, Chief Incumbent of Staten Island Buddhist Vihara, New York; Ven. Siyambalagoda Ananda Nayaka Thero, Chief Incumbent of Arizona Buddhist Vihara; Ven. Kegalle Ratanasara Nayaka Thero, Chief Incumbent of Veherahena, Matara; Ven. Soorakkulame Pemaratana Thero, Chief Incumbent of Pittsburg, Buddhist Vihara in Pennsylvania; Ven. Panangala Wajirabuddhi Thero, Chief Incumbent of Georgia Buddhist Vihara; Ven. Wajirapola Thero, Chief Incumbent of North Carolina Buddhist Vihara; Ven. Morathota Ananda Thero, Chief Incumbent of Florida Buddhist Vihara; Ven. Bogolle Sumana Thero, Chief Incumbent of Rathana Buddhist Vihara in Los Angeles; Ven. Thanthirimale Mahanama Thero, Chief Incumbent of Dhammahadaya Vihara in Viriginia; Ven. Pinkane Maithree Thero, Chief Incumbent of Virginia Buddhist Vihara; Ven. Bandarawela Seela Viveka, Chief Incumbent of Mahamevnawa Buddhist Vihara in Washington; Ven. Gintota Wimala Thero, Chief Incumbent of Nisala Arana Buddhist Vihara in Maryland; Ven. Neluwakande Gnanananda Thero from Sri Lanka.

Members of the Sri Lankan – American community and several Buddhists representing Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Indian communities, were in attendance.

Ambassador Prasad Kariyawasam addressed the gathering and delivered the felicitation message from the President Maithripala Sirisena, who commended the contribution of Ven. Katugastota Uparatana Thero to Buddha Sasana and his socio-cultural activities, and complimented the efforts of Ven. Katugastota Uparatana Thero in enabling Sri Lankan Americans to mobilize with the Government of Sri Lanka to embark on a new historic journey for building a reconciled, inclusive and harmonious society in Sri Lanka.  (Full text of the message is linked).
