The people of Sri Lanka are the most generous charitable donors throughout the whole of Asia, according to the largest study ever carried out into charitable behaviours across the globe.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has described the report’s findings as being “an honour for each and every Sri Lankan citizen.”

The “World Giving Index”, produced by the UK-based Charities Aid Foundation surveyed the charitable behaviour of people in 153 countries, representing 95 per cent of the world’s population.

The Asian number one spot for Sri Lanka was based on a major global survey by the independent research company Gallup which measured the percentage of people who have given money to charity, the number of people who have given time to those less fortunate than themselves, and those who helped a stranger.
