Government rebuts Channel 4 claims

New documentary features interviews with named sources who witnessed final days of the LTTE conflict

The Government of Sri Lanka has released a documentary to rebut the allegations made by Channel 4, a United Kingdom broadcast channel, which earlier this year produced a program entitled “Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields.”

The hour-long video, “Lies Agree Upon — An Investigative Documentary into the final days of the Sri Lankan conflict,” addresses point-by-point the allegations made by Channel 4.

Unlike Channel 4′s report, which failed to cite sources for casualty figures, name many sources and which put others in shadows, those interviewed in the government’s rebuttal are named and shown. Many have returned to their homes and work, and offer vivid verbal evidence to counter the Channel 4 allegations.

In the video, a woman who Channel 4 identified as a medical volunteer is identified by a former LTTE cadre as a member of the LTTE. A number of doctors who served in the conflict zone dispel claims that hospitals were shelled and that the government failed to provide civilians held hostage by the LTTE with food and medicine. They also said that during the conflict the LTTE gave them bogus casualty figures to share with the press. Something as simple as a civilian protest, which Channel 4 said was spontaneous, is shown by the documentary to have been arranged by the LTTE.
