Keeping with its tradition, Los Angeles based Sri Lanka Foundation honored twelve exceptional Sri Lankan expatriates who have achieved success in their work and profession. This year awards ceremony gala event was held at Biltmore Hotel in California with the patronage of Dr. Walter Jayasinghe, who established the Sri Lanka Foundation. Ambassador Prasad Kariyawasam attended the event as the Guest of Honor.

Ambassador presented Lifetime Achievement Awards to Prof. Asoka Mendis, Dr. Sivalingam Sivananthan, Prof. Lakshman Samaranayake, Dr. Raj Barr-Kumarakulasinghe and Eranga and Prianga Peiris. Professor Asoka Mendis is a world recognized expert on Astrophysics from San Diego, California. Dr. Sivananthan is a distinguished academician, successful entrepreneur, and a philanthropist from Illinois. Professor Samaranayake is considered leading expert in oral candidiasis and is from Australia. Dr. Barr-Kumarakulasinghe of Washington D.C. is the first person of color elected as the National President of the American Institute of Architects. The international singing duo, Eranga & Prianga have been bringing immense credit to Sri Lanka by singing about the rich heritage of Sri Lanka for 49 years and now live in New York.

Addressing the large gathering, Ambassador Kariyawasam conveyed appreciation of the Government of Sri Lanka for the achievements of the award winning Sri Lankan expatriates and for their contributions to the well-being of the people of Sri Lanka. He highlighted the need for persons of Sri Lankan origin living abroad to contribute towards further progress of their mother country and to assist in promoting the profile of Sri Lanka in its true character and historic image.
